Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions that we frequently receive with regards to joining our orchestra. If your question is not answered here, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
What are the audition requirements for NUSSO?
You will be required to perform two contrasting pieces during the audition. You will also be tested on scales and your sight-reading abilities.
How do I request for an audition?
You can request for an audition by registering at our booth during the NUS matriculation fair or by filling up our online audition form.
Must I have prior experience playing in band/orchestra/string ensemble to join NUSSO?
Prior experience in ensemble playing will be helpful, although not absolutely necessary. However, you should be adequately competent in the instrument you are auditioning for.
What instrument can I audition for?
You can audition for a place in NUSSO using any standard orchestral instrument. This includes the standard string (including harp), woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.
What is your rehearsal schedule like?
NUSSO rehearsals are held every Wednesday, from 7.00 pm to 9.30 pm at the Auditorium in the CFA Studios (click here for map). Rehearsals may also be conducted on Sundays from 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm in preparation for concerts.
Why should I join NUSSO?
Not only will you have an enjoyable experience performing music in orchestral and ensemble settings from an extensive repertoire, you will also have the opportunity to meet many like-minded individuals who share your passion and love for music. Furthermore, music isn’t all we do; NUSSO also organises regular outings and gatherings for its members to relax, have fun and get to know each other outside of rehearsals. NUSSO isn’t just an orchestra; it’s also a community where our members can feel a sense of belonging.
What sort of performing opportunities would I have with NUSSO?
In addition to performing in our annual formal concert in March and casual outdoor concert in September/October, NUSSO members can also look forward to playing in a number of concerts and activities, such as our annual chamber concert Miniatures, or fringe events in the annual NUS Arts Festival. In addition, NUSSO members can also perform in gigs and external engagements throughout the year. NUSSO members may also have the opportunity to perform on overseas tours; our orchestra most recently toured Korea in 2009.
